Brazilian Butt Lift Continues to Soar in Popularity

brazilian butt lift surgery in naples florida

The Brazilian Butt Lift has been the third fastest growing cosmetic surgery so far this century—a 254 percent increase in annual procedures performed compared with 2000. Naples, Florida-based Gardner Plastic Surgery is proud to have a dedicated surgeon on staff  with extensive training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the world-renowned Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, Dr. Leopoldo M. Baccaro. Dr. Baccaro offers the Brazilian Butt Lift as an option to enhance the hips and buttocks.

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a two-step procedure utilizing liposuction and fat transfer to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the hips and buttocks. The procedure helps correct flattening, sagging and unbalancing of the buttocks region that happens to people as they age,as a result of reduced exercise, or simply due to genetics. The Brazilian Butt Lift is considered an alternative option to the traditional butt lift, which relies on silicone implants to achieve the firming, plumper look.

The liposuction component of the Brazilian Butt Lift provides further aesthetic enhancement by removing fatty deposits in other parts of the body. When removed from the waist and thighs, this can result in an immediate slimming effect that further enhances the patient’s silhouette . This excess fat is then grafted into the patient’s upper buttocks region to achieve the pronounced curve and appearance of higher, fuller and more firm buttocks.

What to Expect From Your Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure

A Brazilian Butt Lift procedure at Gardner Plastic Surgery begins with an initial consultation and physical examination with Dr. Baccaro, who needs to determine which fatty deposits can be removed from other parts of the body for the best effect. The consultation will also include a detailed discussion about the aesthetic goals you want to achieve with the procedure.

The actual surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure using either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. To help reduce signs of visible scarring, the procedure relies on small, carefully placed incisions for both the liposuction and grafting components of the procedure.

The procedure itself can be successfully conducted in an afternoon, with limited pain and discomfort; however, patients will need about two weeks of careful down time for successful recovery. Not only is this downtime needed for surgery recovery, but to provide time for the grafted fat to successfully meld into its new location in the body. During this recovery period, patients need to avoid sitting or lying directly on the buttocks. Dr. Baccaro will provide other recommendations for successful recovery and buttocks shape retention as needed.

Educate Yourself During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

pink ribbon, breast cancer awareness from gardner plastic surgery

With first-hand experience helping survivors overcome the physical changes, and improve their self-esteem through breast reconstruction surgery, Naples, Florida-based Gardner Plastic Surgery is intimately familiar with breast cancer. Annually, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we feel we should do our part to educate our patients and other readers about this disease that impacts one out of every eight women. Read on to learn more about breast cancer causes, risk factors, and other facts regarding the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.

Breast cancer is caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth that generally form into solid masses called tumors. Tumor cells that can grow into and interfere with adjacent tissue or spread to other parts of the body are considered “malignant,” and are cancerous. Tumors that do not invade nearby tissues or spread throughout the body are known as “benign,” and are not cancerous. Benign breast lumps in women are fairly common, but all suspicious growths in the breast area should be checked. Additionally, some types of breast cancer may not cause a lump in the breast. For this reason regularly scheduled mammograms are recommended, which are the best means for early detection of potential cancers at their earliest stages. The age at which you should start getting mammograms depends on several factors. A discussion with your primary care physician or general doctor is important to determine your individual indications.

Causes of Breast Cancer

Determining the exact cause of a woman’s specific breast cancer is nearly impossible, but damage to the cell’s DNA is the bottom-line cause. While this suggests a genetic influence passed down through heredity, researchers believe that less than 10 percent of breast cancers are directly caused by a genetic abnormality passed down through a parent’s genes. In most cases, researchers believe genetic abnormalities arise as part of the aging process and as a result of various environmental and lifestyle factors. Genetics, though, can influence the likelihood of DNA damage, and subsequent breast cancer formation.

Thus, there are both genetic and environmental risk factors at play with breast cancer; however, only about 65 percent of women who get breast cancer can be positively linked with these risk factors, while many women with these risk factors will remain breast cancer free.

Genetic Factors That Increase Breast Cancer Risk

  • Being female—Women are 100 times more susceptible to breast cancer than men.
  • Being white—Caucasian women are more predisposed to get breast cancer than women of all other races.
  • Close relatives who have been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer, especially if the diagnoses was made before age 50.
  • Early (before age 12) menstruation and/or late (after 55) menopause.
  • Never having a child, or bearing children late in the childbearing years.
  • BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutations (consider taking a genetic test if family history of breast cancer).
  • Having dense breast tissue (which also makes it harder to detect possible breast lumps).

Environmental and Lifestyle Factors That Increase the Risk

  • Poor diet lacking fruits and vegetables and high in saturated fats.
  • Frequent or excess consumption of alcohol.
  • Lack of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle.
  • Being overweight or clinically obese.
  • Previous radiation to the chest areas prior to the age of 30.
  • Hormone replacement therapies for managing menopause.

Other Facts About Breast Cancer

  • More than 250,000 U.S. women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
  • Breast Cancer kills more than 40,000 American women per year.
  • Second leading cause of cancer death in women.
  • More than 3 million breast cancer survivors are alive in America today.
  • While rare, about 2,500 American men are diagnosed with breast cancer per year, resulting in about 450 related deaths.

With these risks and facts about breast cancer in mind, we urge all women to take a proactive approach to their continued good health! Tell your doctor about any genetic risk factors you may be aware of, and consider whether you can mitigate possible environmental impacts. Also, be aware of the normal look, shape and feel of your breasts, and vigilant about seeing a doctor if you notice any changes. And, last, but not least, make sure you’re always scheduled for regularly scheduled screenings, such as physical exams and mammograms, appropriate for your age and risk profile.

Gardner Plastic Surgery Offers Safe, Allergy Free Ear Piercing to Adults and Children

baby on a beach with pierce ears, safe medical ear piercings available at Gardner Plastic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery generally involves invasive medical procedures, but many plastic surgery practices also offer a variety of non-invasive treatments that address signs of aging, weight gain and offer other aesthetic enhancements. Naples, Florida-based Gardner Plastic Surgery has long offered such treatments, and is now adding medical ear piercing. The specialized Blomdahl medical ear piercing treatment safely pierces ears of all ages by reducing the risk of infections, blood-born diseases and allergies. Available only through medical professionals, the Blomdahl treatment is provided by Dr. Leo Baccaro, the newest member of the Gardner Plastic Surgery team.

Why the Need for “Medical” Ear Piercing?

Ear piercing is loosely regulated with few restrictions on training and piercing devices used. Such loose regulation increases the possibility of infection or blood-borne disease, or—and more likely—exposure to contact allergies such as caused by nickel. In fact, ear piercings by studs containing nickel are believed to be the number one cause of these allergies.

Once a contact allergy sets in, most people will have it for life, and some will end up with symptoms so uncomfortable that they may not be able to wear earrings at all. Given that some parents opt for piercing their babies and toddlers, it makes sense to seek out the safest piercing option.

How is the “Blomdahl” System Different?

Businesses offering ear piercing may claim that their piercing method and initial studs are nickel free or “hypoallergenic,” although such claims can be compromised by alloys, or a disregard for the composition of the metals used in studs. The Blomdahl system guarantees the avoidance of allergy emergence by offering only studs made from medical-grade plastic or medical-grade titanium, both of which are readily accepted by the skin.

The Blomdahl ear piercing system also utilizes the modern “aseptic technique,” a sterile piercing  gun with disposable cartridges that ensures the piercing process is free of infection or blood-borne viruses. Additionally, the Blomdahl piercing studs are specifically designed to stimulate healing and easily change to regular earrings after the healing process has concluded. The studs and their backs allow for air circulation to promote healing and the stud posts create slightly larger holes that are not as prone to getting damaged when changing earrings.

Your Blomdahl Ear Piercing at Gardner Plastic Surgery

When you choose the Blomdahl ear piercing procedure at Gardner Plastic Surgery, Dr. Baccaro will discuss the procedure with you and explain the differences between medical-grade plastic and medical-grade titanium studs. You will be asked about any ailments or allergies that you might have that could compromise ear piercing. Those under the age of 16 will need written permission from their parents or legal guardians, and should be accompanied by them. Dr. Baccaro will also review the written aftercare instructions with you, which you will have to attest to the receipt of and intention to follow. After this initial consultation, the procedure can be performed in minutes and you or your child will be sporting new earrings that are free of infection and risk of allergies.

Gardner Plastic Surgery in Naples, Florida, is pleased to offer this new service to its existing adult patient base and to parents seeking safe, allergy free ear piercing for their children. If you would like to learn more about the Blomdahl system or schedule a piercing for yourself or your children contact our office today at 239.566.2611.

Eyelid Surgery One of the Top-Five Cosmetic Procedures in the U.S.?

beautiful senior woman with bright face and complexion, discussing eyelid surgery procedure

When people think about cosmetic surgery the first procedures to come to mind are usually breast augmentation, liposuction and facelifts. This makes sense because these procedures are usually among the top-five most commonly performed in the U.S. every year. But did you know that eyelid surgery also tends to make that annual top-five list?

In fact, eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, was the fourth most common invasive cosmetic procedure performed in 2017, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual statistics report. The society reported that 209,000 blepharoplasties were performed during the year, about the same number as 2016. For context, that is over 80,000 more than the 125,000 or so facelift surgeries reported.

So What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is an advanced plastic surgery procedure that treats age-related changes to the skin and fat around the eyes. These changes tend to emerge because the skin loses its elasticity as we age, and fat around the eye tends to protrude into the eyelids. Some patients may simply have a genetic predisposition for these changes.

In particular, eyelid surgery reduces bagginess and bulging around the upper and lower eyelid areas, and treats under-eye bags and sinking eyelids. Drooping eyelids, which is also known as ptosis, can also be addressed during a blepharoplasty.

These changes to the skin over time, generally give an older and more tired appearance, no matter how well rested. A blepharoplasty is specifically tailored for each patient to reduce these conditions, and generally results in a more youthful, well-rested, and dramatically rejuvenated look.

While a blepharoplasty may eliminate some fine wrinkling below the lower eyelid, it will not eliminate crow’s feet or other facial wrinkles, although it may improve under-eye dark circles. Eyelid surgery does not alter your facial structure or alleviate other age-related conditions, so some patients elect to include other procedures, such as forehead lifts, laser resurfacing and filler injections, with their blepharoplasty. When considering eyelid surgery, make sure to discuss all aesthetic goals with your plastic surgeon.

Blepharoplasty Also Performed for Functional Reasons

Sometimes excessive skin builds up on the upper eyelids to the extent in which it causes an extra fold of skin to hang over the eyelashes. This extra fold can impede sight lines and impair vision. While health insurance doesn’t generally cover cosmetic procedures, if you can prove that drooping eyelids or extra folds are affecting your vision, your insurance company may cover it. Visual field testing by an ophthalmologist or optometrist should properly evaluate any impaired vision.
Whatever the reasons for considering blepharoplasty, Naples, Florida-based Gardner Plastic Surgery has an excellent track record in successfully performing the procedure. Both Dr. Paul Gardner and Dr. Leo Baccaro are highly competent in these procedures and can help you achieve your aesthetic goals. If you would like to learn more about blepharoplasty and how Gardner Plastic Surgery can help rejuvenate the area around your eyes, and, if needed, improve your vision, contact us today at 239.566.2611 to schedule your initial consultation.

Popular Plastic Surgery For Men

attractive middle aged man smiling, blog post about popular male plastic surgeries

While plastic surgery has long been associated with women, a significant number of men also seek out cosmetic surgery options. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 1.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed on men in 2017, a one percent increase over 2016. While many men opt for plastic surgery procedures for cosmetic reasons, professional advancement also plays a role. Career advancement in many fields has become exceptionally competitive, spurring some men to seek an edge through the enhancement of good looks and a more youthful appearance.

No matter what the reason, most male plastic surgery procedures are equally popular with women. However, some procedures, remain gender specific. For example, the leading plastic surgery procedure—breast augmentation—was performed exclusively on women in 2017. Likewise, gynecomastia repair (male breast reduction) was performed exclusively on men. Chin augmentation (mentoplasty) is perhaps the most gender neutral procedure, with almost equal numbers of men and women receiving the treatment in 2017.

Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures for Men in 2017

On a numbers basis, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) was the most popular plastic surgery procedure performed on men in 2017. While rhinoplasty can help men look better and feel more confident, the surgery is also often performed on a functional basis to repair broken noses and correct breathing problems caused by a deviated septum.

Eyelid rejuvenation (blepharoplasty) was the second most popular plastic surgery procedure performed on men in 2017. The procedure helps treat sagging skin (eye bags) and reduces fine lines around the upper and lower eyelid areas. Giving patients a more youthful and less fatigued appearance. The procedure can, as well, improve the vision of those patients who have excessive skin on their upper eyelids. Scarring is generally minimal, making the procedure more attractive to men who may tend to be guarded about letting others know that they’ve had cosmetic surgery.

Liposuction came third in numbers as the most popular cosmetic surgery for men in 2017. The procedure is used primarily to remove hard-to-reduce fat deposits in the abdomen and flanks. Abdominal “etching” is a novel procedure in which using liposuction techniques are used to sculpt the abdomen and help define your underlying musculature.

With up to 50 percent of all men experiencing gynecomastia at some point in their lives, gynecomastia repair also proved popular as a 2017 male plastic surgery option. The Mayo Clinic reports that over 200,000 American men struggle with gynecomastia every year, helping make male breast reduction surgery one of the fastest growing cosmetic surgeries in the U.S.

Rounding out the most popular-by-number 2017 male plastic surgeries performed were:

  • Hair transplantation
  • Facelift (rhytidectomy)
  • Dermabrasion
  • Ear reshaping (Otoplasty)
  • Chin augmentation (mentoplasty)

Dr. Paul Gardner and Dr. Leopoldo Baccaro have extensive experience providing aesthetic and reconstructive cosmetic surgeries for men. Gardner Plastic Surgery works closely with all male patients in the Naples, Florida-based practice to tailor results that will help them enhance their natural good looks, restore vitality, and boost self-confidence. How a Mommy Makeover Can Help You Recover Your Pre-Pregnancy Body

mommy-makeover-procedures

Motherhood takes a toll on a woman’s body, with many impacts—such as weight gain, sagging breasts, stretch marks and muscle tone loss—similar to that caused by aging. More than half of postpartum mothers express disappointment with the changes and failure to return to their pre-pregnancy figures, and some could undoubtedly benefit from a mommy makeover. Naples, Florida-based Gardner Plastic Surgery has a long, successful track record of using mommy makeovers to help mothers of all ages restore the youthful body shape and look they enjoyed prior to pregnancy. Dr. Paul Gardner and Dr. Leo Baccaro specialize in mommy makeovers to address stubborn fat around the stomach, arms and thighs; correct sagging skin and stretch marks; and correct the childbirth and nursing-related impacts to the breasts.

What Exactly is a Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover is not a single procedure, but rather a series of procedures designed to restore your body to its pre-pregnancy shape and appearance. Every woman’s body is different. The specific impacts from childbearing vary, and patient’s aesthetic goals are individual and unique. Each mommy makeover is tailored specifically for each patient. Among the mommy makeover procedures offered by Gardner Plastic Surgery are:

  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
  • Liposuction
  • Breast Lift
  • Breast Reduction
  • Breast Augmentation
  • Breast Lift + Augmentation

Tummy Tuck Versus Liposuction

Tummy tuck and liposuction procedures both remove fat, but the tummy tuck is designed specifically to reduce abdominal fat, loose skin and stretch marks, as well as tighten muscles and connective tissue. Also known as an “abdominoplasty,” a tummy tuck targets the changes caused by the pregnancy related expansion of your midsection. A liposuction can remove the excess midsection fat caused by pregnancy, but does not specifically tighten skin, muscle and connective tissue. Your Doctor may recommend a combination of tummy tuck and liposuction, and the latter procedure may also be used as part of your mommy makeover to reduce postpartum weight gain in other areas of your body, such as the thighs, buttocks and arms.

Mommy Makeover Breast Procedures

Pregnancy and subsequent nursing generally causes changes in the breasts of postpartum mothers. Most women’s breasts swell to a much larger size during pregnancy, with some remaining enlarged after pregnancy and nursing. In some cases, the enlarged breasts cause discomfort and back pain, and some women just do not like the new enlarged size and shape of their postpartum breasts. A breast reduction is designed to remove fat and excess tissue, and tighten the surrounding skin, with the goal of returning the breasts to their pre-pregnancy size, shape, and while improving nipple position.

Other than enlarging the breasts, pregnancy and nursing might cause breasts to sag, lose their volume, become uneven or misshapen, expand the areolas, or deform the nipples. Breast lifts can restore uneven and sagging breasts and adjust expanded areolas and reshape nipples. Those women who have lost size and shape may want to consider breast augmentation, which restores the size and shape with implants. With some mommy makeovers, your doctor may recommend a combination breast lift and augmentation for optimal results.

Dr. Paul Gardner, Dr. Leo Baccaro and the Naples, Florida-based cosmetic surgery practice has established a sterling reputation for mommy makeover surgical skill and artistry. The doctors work closely with all patients at this southwest Florida cosmetic surgery practice to tailor results that will help them recover their pre-pregnancy appearance and enhance their inner vitality. If you would like to learn more about mommy makeovers contact Gardner Plastic Surgery today at 239.566.2611 to schedule your initial consultation.

Considering Nipples and Areolas as Part of Overall Breast Aesthetics

nipple-and-areola-aesthetic

Breast augmentation and breast lifts may be among the most popular procedures in the field of cosmetic surgery, but cosmetic procedures for the nipples and areolas can also deliver significant aesthetic enhancements. This is because the nipple and surrounding areola—the pigmented skin around the nipples—serve as a central focal point for each breast. Their look, shape and placement help define the overall appearance and symmetry of the breasts.

As found with other physical features, potential imperfections with the nipples and areolas can be a natural factor present since birth, or can evolve over time due to developmental and hormonal reasons. Additionally, trauma due to an accident or surgery can bring noticeable changes. Whatever the source of dissatisfaction with one’s nipples and/or areolas, plastic surgeons offer a number of procedures designed to correct potential flaws.

Cosmetic Procedures for the Nipples and Areolas

Cosmetic procedures for nipples and areolas are often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as breast lifts, breast reductions, augmentation or as part of reconstructive surgery. However, the following aesthetic procedures can also be performed as stand-alone surgeries:

  • Breast Lift
  • Nipple Reduction
  • Inverted Nipple Correction
  • Supernumerary Nipple Correction
  • Areola Reshaping

Breast lifts are among the most sought after cosmetic procedure involving nipples and areolas. Clinically referred to as “breast ptosis,” nipples that are positioned too low relative to the rest of the breast are often found in patients with enlarged breasts, or can develop over time due to aging skin, or after breast-feeding. Breast ptosis correction lifts the nipples to a more aesthetic position, and can improve overall symmetry by re-positioning nipples that are too narrowly or widely spread apart. The procedure will also help improve size, shape, and symmetry of the areolas while giving the breast a more youthful appearance.

Also referred to as “hypertrophy,” enlarged nipples can be caused by natural over-development, or emerge due to the effects of breastfeeding. Some women seek nipple reduction surgery because they are concerned that hypertrophic nipples are too conspicuous, but nipple hypertrophy can also be uncomfortable due to chafing and irritation. There are a number of corrective fixes, but surgical tissue removal is the most common.

Inverted nipples, lack normal protrusion and lie below the surrounding skin surface. It can occur at various stages of a woman’s life; presenting itself in early childhood, during adolescence, or occurring after the breast tissue diminishes with the conclusion of breast feeding. There are different levels of contraction, as well as a variety of causes. In general, surgical fixes rely on releasing the surrounding tissues, and restoring a natural protruding position.

Supernumerary Nipples Are a Common Condition

Supernumerary nipples, which can also include accessory breast tissue, occur in both females and males at a rate of about one out of 18 people. They often resemble moles or other benign skin conditions, but can present more like nipples, and even lactate, depending upon hormonal activity and the amount of accessory breast tissue. Corrective procedures generally include full removal of the supernumerary nipple, areola and all associated breast tissue.

While some areola irregularity or asymmetry is normal, sometimes the imperfections can impair a woman’s self-esteem. Whether the areola is too big, too small or misshapen, surgical improvements generally involves removing skin adjacent to, or within the areola and suturing it and the surrounding skin to provide the desired symmetry, shape and size.
